Baseball and the American Dream - Race, Class, Gender, and the National Pastime (Hardcover): Robert Elias Baseball and the American Dream - Race, Class, Gender, and the National Pastime (Hardcover)
Robert Elias
R3,984 Discovery Miles 39 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

One particular American sport arguably surpasses all others in reflecting U.S. society: the national pastime -- baseball. Roger Angell has suggested, "Baseball seems to have been invented solely for the purpose of explaining all other things in life". It has uniquely mirrored the trends within our culture and has been associated with "The American Dream" in all of its permutations. Baseball has been an arena in which the mightiest struggles of our society -- equal rights regardless of race, nationality, or gender -- have been played out.

Editor Robert Elias has woven together a collection of essays of exceptional diversity to look at how baseball and the American Dream have connected through history to the present day, as well as providing a signpost to the future of baseball in American popular culture. Featuring articles by former players such as Orlando Cepeda and Dusty Baker (currently the manager for the San Francisco Giants), legendary journalists such as Leonard Koppett, Andrei Codrescu, and Roger Kahn, and contemporary scholars such as Jules Tygiel, Gai Berlage, and Samuel Regalado, this volume provides a unique and valuable perspective on baseball and its distinctive place in American culture.

R4,014 Discovery Miles 40 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This important new book on criminology is a major attempt to evaluate actual victim compensation programs as well as their political and economic contexts, through the eyes of the victims themselves.Elias traces the experiences of violent-crime victims throughout the entire criminal justice process, comparing New York's and New Jersey's victim compensation programs. He shows how programs differ when compensation is viewed essentially as welfare and when it is viewed as a right. The study uses extensive interviews with officials and with violent crime victims. The study indicates victim compensation programs largely fail to achieve their stated goals of improving attitudes toward the criminal-justice system and the government. The programs produce poor attitudes toward government and criminal justice.

We all have stories we remember from our youth we heard listening to the grown ups talk. Within this book I have recorded some of those stories and tales along with some life experiences others will resonate. It is by writing them down we live over again the times these were created. For the nostalgic, words and thoughts of family times sitting around a fireplace and listening to stories that sometimes made it hard to go to sleep seem so vivid.

Genealogy is a fascinating study. All of us who were born on the native soil of the United States owe a debt of gratitude to our forebears. Much information for heritage studies is available on the internet. While doing research on my family I learned so much. For some it meant leaving the familiar and a three month voyage across the Atlantic. Some came to America because they were persecuted for their religious beliefs while some came searching for the proverbial end of the rainbow. I discovered family members who were involved in the Revolutionary War. One of my wife's family members was in five battles including the Battle of Cowpens, a turning point in the war. Two other family members were also present. I wondered if they might have know one another. I also learned of my mothers family who came here from Scotland as a stone mason helping to build a notable bridge in the upstate of South Carolina. I learned much about my ancestors and now am even more proud of my heritage. I wrote this as a labor of love because I wanted my children and grand children to be able to know their family roots and to be proud of their heritage. Having compiled this book will enable them to know this information. For others, reading this book may be the impetus for a great adventure for further genealogy studies. I have also included some stories from my own journey of life. These are life experiences, stories and tales from my own life.

Family genealogy is something that recently became an interest for me. I knew very about our family roots and when I made a visit to our local genealogy society to research my Grandmother Ballard's family, Maybelle Thompson Ballard, the volunteers working were able to help me find information and steer me into other avenues of research. My findings are included in this book as are the genealogy of my wife, the Maybins. It would be a monumental task to include a complete genealogical overview in a book of this nature so I have only limited my findings to those of my immediate family. As a writer of short stories pertaining to my own life experiences I am including some of my writings.

Hi, Thanks for reading this description of my latest book. I am Robert E. Ballard from Zirconia, North Carolina and live with my wife, Jane and son Gary in the Green River community of Henderson County. Retiring in 2003 from General Electric Outdoor Lighting after almost 30 years of service I discovered that I liked to write and joined an on-line writing site called hub pages. The articles contained in Living the Good Life-Part I are all short stories which I wrote on my site and cover a broad range of topics. We all have memories created over the span of our life. In this volume I share many of those memories. I grew up in a small rural mountain community in Western North Carolina called Tuxedo, a cotton mill village. The stories in this book are written to record and to share those memories that warmed my heart, made me smile, and sometimes invoked personal reflection. My writing style is simple, down to earth with the wisdom one might expect of ordinary folk. In writing these articles it has been my goal to not only share these stories but to preserve these simple life experiences that some may have forgotten or taken for granted. ll village, my military years, inspirational thoughts, and tales told to me. Readers will experience the thoughts and emotions conveyed in a simple narrative. My stories are a collection which I have written over time and published on a writers blog where other writers read and give feedback on the subject matter and and content. The articles in this book all received high marks from my fellow writers.

Peter Dreier, Robert Elias; Foreword by Dave Zirin
R914 Discovery Miles 9 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Baseball Rebels Peter Dreier and Robert Elias examine the key social challenges-racism, sexism and homophobia-that shaped society and worked their way into baseball's culture, economics, and politics. Since baseball emerged in the mid-1800s to become America's pastime, the nation's battles over race, gender, and sexuality have been reflected on the playing field, in the executive suites, in the press box, and in the community. Some of baseball's rebels are widely recognized, but most of them are either little known or known primarily for their baseball achievements-not their political views and activism. Everyone knows the story of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color line, but less known is Sam Nahem, who opposed the racial divide in the U.S. military and organized an integrated military team that won a championship in 1945. Or Toni Stone, the first of three women who played for the Indianapolis Clowns in the previously all-male Negro Leagues. Or Dave Pallone, MLB's first gay umpire. Many players, owners, reporters, and other activists challenged both the baseball establishment and society's status quo. Baseball Rebels tells stories of baseball's reformers and radicals who were influenced by, and in turn influenced, America's broader political and social protest movements, making the game-and society-better along the way.

Major League Rebels - Baseball Battles over Workers' Rights and American Empire (Hardcover): Robert Elias, Peter Dreier Major League Rebels - Baseball Battles over Workers' Rights and American Empire (Hardcover)
Robert Elias, Peter Dreier; Foreword by Bill Lee
R1,278 Discovery Miles 12 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A captivating history of the baseball reformers and revolutionaries who challenged their sport and society--and in turn helped change America. Athletes have often used their platform to respond to and protest injustices, from Muhammad Ali and Colin Kaepernick to Billie Jean King and Megan Rapinoe. Compared to their counterparts, baseball players have often been more cautious about speaking out on controversial issues; but throughout the sport's history, there have been many players who were willing to stand up and fight for what was right. In Major League Rebels: Baseball Battles over Workers' Rights and American Empire, Robert Elias and Peter Dreier reveal a little-known yet important history of rebellion among professional ballplayers. These reformers took inspiration from the country's dissenters and progressive movements, speaking and acting against abuses within their profession and their country. Elias and Dreier profile the courageous players who demanded better working conditions, battled against corporate power, and challenged America's unjust wars, imperialism, and foreign policies, resisting the brash patriotism that many link with the "national pastime." American history can be seen as an ongoing battle over wealth and income inequality, corporate power versus workers' rights, what it means to be a "patriotic" American, and the role of the United States outside its borders. For over 100 years, baseball activists have challenged the status quo, contributing to the kind of dissent that creates a more humane society. Major League Rebels tells their inspiring stories.

Reconceptualizing Critical Victimology - Interventions and Possibilities (Paperback): Dale Spencer, Sandra Walklate Reconceptualizing Critical Victimology - Interventions and Possibilities (Paperback)
Dale Spencer, Sandra Walklate; Contributions by Anette Ballinger, Neil Chakraborti, Rachel Condry, …
R1,701 Discovery Miles 17 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the 1960s, the field of victimology has developed into a variegated discipline with its own theoretical and methodological traditions. In the early 1990s two texts were published-Towards a Critical Victimology (Fattah, 1992) and Critical Victimology (Mawby and Walklate, 1994)-that concretized critical victimology as a paradigm within victimology. Since then, the field has remained conceptually stale and with few a few exceptions there has not been a considerable lacuna of works from a critical perspective. Reconceptualizing Critical Victimology: Interventions and Possibilities provides a rejoinder to the two aforementioned texts and demonstrate how critical victimology can be reconceptualized, where interventions can be made in this victimological paradigm, and possibilities for future theorizing and research in this provocative field. Reconceptualizing Critical Victimology includes eleven papers on the forms of victimization and issues pertinent to victims written by leading and emerging international scholars in the field of critical victimology. It is interdisciplinary in scope and contains contributions from leading and emergent international scholars on victims and victimization. Reconceptualizing Critical Victimology serves as a crucible to demonstrate the complexities of and the multitude of factors that interact to complicate victim status, the vagaries of victim response, and the phenomenology of violence and victimization.

Victims Still - The Political Manipulation of Crime Victims (Paperback): Robert Elias Victims Still - The Political Manipulation of Crime Victims (Paperback)
Robert Elias
R2,545 Discovery Miles 25 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Official crime policy shifted its focus from crime and criminals to victimization and victims in the 1980s and early 1990s. As a result, crime victims were the subject of extensive new legislation addressing victim needs, rights, and services. But did these initiatives really help victims, or did they help further Reagan and Bush administration "law and order" policies for curbing offender and public rights in favor of increasing police power? And has such power escalated incidents like the Rodney King case in Los Angeles? In this controversial and thought-provoking book, Robert Elias evaluates the effectiveness of the last decade's victim policy and argues that victims have been politically manipulated for official objectives. As a result, little victim support has occurred, and victimization keeps escalating. He reaches these conclusions from a thorough examination of victim legislation, get-tough crime policies, media crime coverage, the victim movement, and the wars on crime and drugs. Finally, he proposes solutions that could lead to substantially less crime. Students and professionals of criminology, victimology, policy studies, and political science will find Victims Still an exceptionally stimulating resource. "In Victims Still, Elias demonstrates again that he is a preeminent scholar in the field of victimology. This work provides a unique, provocative, and elucidative account of the politicization of the victims' movement as well as the social and political ramifications of the 'get tough' crime policies and enforcement strategies of the 1980s. Dr. Elias raises serious and challenging questions about the currency of conventional responses to crime victims and offenders. Victims Still should be required reading for crime victim researchers and program practitioners. This book offers a thoughtful reconsideration of the causes of crime and violence in America. Professor Elias's solutions to the crime problem are sweeping and progressive." --Arthur J. Lurigio, Ph.D., Loyola University of Chicago
